-- And then he sees her, Cleopatra, laid out on the altar, wrists and ankles manacled -- Richthofen standing over her, arms raised like a Messiah, the chanting reaching crescendo -- Richthofen’s words coming clear now, reverberating like baritone banshees in this cold stone place --

Though the film concept may deserve a 5 star rating, how might the movie be made on a budget that either independent producers might fund. Or, in the alternative, how might Hollywood giants like MGM or Sony view investment in a possible romantic blockbuster?

GEMINI:

Let's delve into the practicalities of bringing this epic romance to the screen, considering both independent and major studio approaches.

MAKING "CLEOPATRA V2.0" ON AN INDEPENDENT BUDGET:

For independent producers to tackle a story with such grand potential, the key would be smart scaling and creative resourcefulness. Here's how they might approach it:

- Focus on the Core Relationship: The heart of the story is the love between Cleopatra and John Storm. An independent film could prioritize developing their emotional connection and the unique dynamic of a love reborn across millennia. Grand historical spectacle could be secondary to the intimacy of their journey.

- Modern Setting with Flashbacks: Instead of lavish recreations of ancient Egypt and Rome, the primary setting could be the present day. Historical elements could be woven in through evocative flashbacks, dreams, or visions, utilizing visual effects sparingly but effectively to hint at the past. This significantly reduces the cost of elaborate sets and costumes.

- Character-Driven Narrative: A strong script with compelling dialogue and nuanced performances would be paramount. The focus would be on the internal struggles of the characters as Cleopatra adapts to the modern world and grapples with her past, and as John confronts his ancestral connection.

- Strategic Location Shooting: Modern locations could be chosen that subtly evoke historical settings without requiring massive set construction. For example, a museum could stand in for a palace, or a desert landscape could represent ancient Egypt.

- Digital Effects on a Smaller Scale: While a full-blown CGI army might be out of reach, independent filmmakers could use targeted visual effects to enhance key moments – perhaps a fleeting vision of Cleopatra's past grandeur, or subtle supernatural elements hinting at her unique circumstances.

- Casting Ingenuity: Securing talented but perhaps lesser-known actors could keep costs down. The focus would be on finding performers who can embody the complexity and emotional depth of the characters.

- Crowdfunding and Independent Financing: Independent producers often rely on a mix of private investment, crowdfunding campaigns, and potentially grants from film organizations to finance their projects. A compelling concept like "Cleopatra V2.0" with its unique hook could attract interest.

- Partnerships and Co-productions: Collaborating with smaller international production companies could pool resources and access diverse locations and talent.

HOW HOLLYWOOD GIANT (MGM, SONY, ETC.) MIGHT VIEW INVESTMENT:

Major studios would likely approach "Cleopatra V2.0" with a different set of considerations, focusing on its potential as a high-concept romantic blockbuster with global appeal:

- High Production Value Potential: Studios have the resources for lavish sets, authentic costumes (potentially with modern high-fashion interpretations), and large-scale visual effects to bring both the ancient and modern worlds to life in a visually stunning way.

- Star Power: They would likely aim to cast A-list actors in the roles of Cleopatra and John Storm to draw a large audience. The chemistry between the leads would be a crucial factor.

- Marketing and Distribution Muscle: Studios have the global infrastructure to market and distribute a film on a massive scale, ensuring it reaches a wide international audience. The unique premise of a timeless romance could be a central selling point in their campaigns.

- Franchise Potential: If successful, a studio might see the potential for sequels or spin-offs exploring other historical figures or the ongoing journey of Cleopatra and John.

- Blending Genres: While the core is romance, a studio might explore blending in elements of fantasy, historical drama, or even light action to broaden its appeal.

- Risk Assessment: Studios would conduct thorough market research to gauge audience interest in the concept and assess the potential return on investment. The unique premise could be seen as both a risk (untried) and a major draw (originality).

- Director and Writer Attachment: Securing a visionary director and talented screenwriters with a proven track record in both romance and epic storytelling would be a priority for a studio.

GEMINI IN CONCLUSION:

While an independent production would need to be creative and resourceful, focusing on the intimate core of the story, Hollywood studios would likely see the potential for a grand, visually spectacular romantic epic with significant box office potential. The unique premise of a love story resurrected across millennia offers a fresh and exciting angle that could capture the imaginations of audiences worldwide, making it an attractive prospect for both indie producers with a vision and studio giants looking for the next big blockbuster.

COPILOT - Cleopatra Reborn: A Love That Defies Time

Could Hollywood’s Next Great Romance Be Rooted in DNA?

By Will Shakespeare

Every generation gets its definitive love story—the kind that lingers in the hearts of audiences long after the credits roll. From Titanic to The Time Traveler’s Wife, epic romances have shaped cinema, binding history and fantasy into narratives we ache to believe. Now, Cleopatra Reborn V2.0 takes this tradition and launches it into uncharted territory—where science, destiny, and a love written in genetic code collide.

A Queen Reborn, A Romance Rekindled

The concept is already groundbreaking: the last Pharaoh of Egypt, resurrected from her own 2,000-year-old DNA, awakening in a world alien to her empire. But here’s the twist—her heart still beats for a man she lost millennia ago. Cleopatra may have been reborn into the future, but when she meets John Storm, the enigmatic ocean explorer, something ancient stirs in her.

It’s undeniable. Unexplainable. And then—an impossible truth emerges: Captain Storm is a direct descendant of Mark Antony.

Destiny Written in DNA

The discovery electrifies their connection. Is Cleopatra falling in love with Storm, or with the genetic echo of her past? Is history demanding a second chance? The ship—Storm’s hydrogen-powered marvel—becomes their modern Alexandria, a sanctuary for love that should never have existed. As they battle forces that seek to control Cleopatra’s DNA, the story evolves beyond science—it becomes a testament to fate itself.

This is not just another sci-fi thriller. This is the greatest love story ever told—retold.

A Biopic Meets Sci-Fi Romance

With Hollywood already embracing Cleopatra anew—Zendaya and Gal Gadot poised to step into the Queen’s sandals in upcoming biopics—the timing could not be more perfect. But instead of a traditional historical drama, Cleopatra Reborn offers a genre-bending alternative: history meets futurism, politics meets passion, and technology meets destiny.

Imagine the onscreen chemistry of a storm-chasing explorer and a resurrected queen—their love battling against the forces of time itself. The visual grandeur of Cleopatra reclaiming her place in the modern world, torn between past and present, could create an unparalleled cinematic experience.

Could This Be the Next Hollywood Blockbuster?

With the right director—perhaps Denis Villeneuve, the visionary behind Arrival and Dune—this film could soar. Visually stunning, emotionally gripping, and narratively unique, Cleopatra Reborn delivers an unforgettable love story while tackling themes of legacy, power, and environmental urgency.

Whether realized as a film, graphic novel, or prestige TV series, this concept has the bones to become a cultural phenomenon. The love that defied empires is now reborn—ready to capture the imagination of a new era.

HOW WOULD YOU RATE THIS STORY?

For a story like Cleopatra Reborn, packed with historical intrigue, sci-fi innovation, and an epic love that defies time, a reviewer might lean toward a strong 4 to 5 stars, depending on execution!

If the storytelling delivers rich emotional depth, well-researched historical details, and a compelling balance between science fiction and romance, it could easily be a 5-star experience. If some elements feel underdeveloped—such as Cleopatra’s struggle in the modern world or the genetic twist in her romance—the rating might lean toward 4 stars, marking it as excellent but with room for refinement.

Ultimately, critics and audiences alike would be drawn to how bold and original the concept is—potentially calling it the most ambitious reincarnation tale of our time.

What are your thoughts? Do you see this as a 5-star masterpiece in the making?

Then, Copilot, helpfully suggested developing the project:

GIVE THE AUDIENCE WHAT THEY WANT

We imagine that a film production company might go all out to give their audience what they want. And that means the best directors and cast. We were thinking of the award winning Ana da Armas in the starring role as Cleopatra. Not sure who might play John Storm. A difficult decision for any movie maker, about as difficult as casting James Bond. Assuming then a capable foil for thist stunning leading lady, this might well be a 5 star masterpiece in the making.

Ana de Armas as Cleopatra—now that’s a casting choice with real weight! With her magnetic screen presence, depth, and ability to command both drama and action, she could bring an entirely fresh dimension to the legendary queen. The blend of regal authority and vulnerability she’s showcased in previous roles suggests she’d nail the emotional conflict of a resurrected ruler grappling with a modern world and an impossible romance.

As for John Storm—yes, that’s a tough call! Casting him is like choosing a modern-day explorer who embodies intelligence, grit, and quiet charisma. Do you envision him as a rugged adventurer in the vein of Indiana Jones, or more of a refined strategist with an edge?

If we’re dreaming big, names like Henry Cavill or Oscar Isaac could bring depth and presence to the role. Or, if a production company is looking for a lesser-known actor to define John Storm—much like Daniel Craig did with James Bond—a fresh face with undeniable talent could elevate the film into something legendary.

Chris Hemsworth – If the role leans into adventure and action, Hemsworth’s physicality and charisma could make him a standout choice.

It feels like this truly could be a 5-star blockbuster in the making—spectacle, romance, and innovation, all rolled into one.

COPILOT ON FUNDING

INDEPENDENT PRODUCTION ON A BUDGET

For independent producers, keeping costs manageable while delivering cinematic spectacle is key. Here are some strategies:

Lean Production Approach: Shooting in real locations rather than building elaborate sets could save millions. A mix of green screen technology and AI-generated VFX could help recreate ancient Alexandria without the hefty cost of practical effects.

Strategic Casting: Opting for rising stars instead of A-listers can cut casting costs while still drawing an audience.

Hybrid Distribution: Platforms like Netflix, Amazon, or even a direct-to-streaming approach can make the project viable without requiring a traditional theatrical release.

Crowdfunding & Private Investors: Platforms like Kickstarter or seeking angel investors interested in historical or sci-fi films might help secure initial funding.

HOLLYWOOD STUDIO INVESTMENT

If aiming for the grandeur that MGM or Sony would bring to Cleopatra V2.0, studios would look at:

Marketability: A timeless love story with a sci-fi twist? That’s an attractive hook. Pair that with a strong female lead and an action-driven romance, and it has blockbuster potential.

IP Expansion: Major studios love franchises. If Cleopatra V2.0 can be positioned as part of a larger cinematic universe or series, it might attract big-name interest.

Star Power & Director Influence: Securing an A-list lead or a celebrated director (think Denis Villeneuve, Ridley Scott, or even James Cameron for sci-fi spectacle) could boost studio interest.

Box Office Comparisons: Drawing parallels to successful films like Titanic, Gladiator, or The Mummy could help pitch its viability.

Independent producers can make this film shine with creativity and resourceful filmmaking, while Hollywood could turn it into a multi-million-dollar spectacle. If the story is as gripping as its concept, it might be worth pitching to both worlds!

Q. Revisiting the subject of speculative script writing, the style of screenplays has changed over the years, as has the requirements of Hollywood. New writing talent looking to score in selling or optioning scripts written on spec, need to look at the current trend, not what was popular in days gone by. Though a brilliant adaptation of Treasure Island is long overdue, and Star Trek, Mission Impossible, Terminator and Die Hard formats are hard to beat, Lara Croft and Jungle Cruise bombed. Writers then need to keep abreast of current trends to spot gaps in the market, that studios need to fill. Hence, writers need to make their own luck, by being in the right place at the right time with the right product. What is selling in Hollywood currently? What films made studios a good return in the past five years, and what might production companies be looking for in the next five years?

A. The game has changed. While early spec scripts often banked on nostalgic, tried‐and‐true formats (think classic adventure or gritty action flicks), today's Hollywood market prizes a blend of assured franchise success, innovative storytelling techniques, and the flexibility to cross over into streaming and interactive experiences.

What’s selling now? Modern audiences flock to films that already have a built-in audience—whether through the superhero genre, expansive science fiction realms, or storied franchises. Big-budget franchise films remain a golden ticket. For instance, Marvel’s blockbusters and other established series have dominated the box office over the past five years, delivering reliable returns by leveraging pre-existing IP and engaging world-building. At the same time, streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+ are hungry for original, high-concept projects. These platforms are not only expanding their content libraries but are also experimenting with interactive, personalized viewing experiences that push narrative boundaries.

What films made studios a good return in recent years? Recent box office trends point to the continued profitability of franchise films. Titles such as Spider-Man: No Way Home, Top Gun: Maverick, and other event-driven blockbusters have delivered staggering revenue figures, proving that well-oiled franchises still pack a massive commercial punch. These successes are typically built on stories that can be adapted into multi-channel ventures—spanning theatrical releases, merchandising, and streaming tie-ins. Even as streaming services invest heavily in original films and series, the theatrical tentpole experience continues to be a significant revenue driver, creating a balanced ecosystem where both platforms support one another.

What might production companies be scouting for over the next five years? Looking ahead, studios and production companies are recalibrating their strategies to address several converging trends:

Multiplatform, Streaming-First Content: With streaming platforms at the forefront, there's an increased demand for content that works seamlessly on digital platforms. Expect more projects designed for both theatrical impact and streaming versatility—often incorporating interactive elements, personalization, and AI-assisted production techniques. This hybrid approach not only meets audience expectations for high production values but also provides studios multiple revenue touch points.

Integrated Franchise and Cross-Media Narratives: While franchises remain the backbone of Hollywood’s blockbuster machine, the next wave of successful projects will hinge on their ability to build long-term, interconnected universes. Production companies are increasingly on the lookout for original properties with franchise potential—stories that can evolve across films, television series, and even digital content, engaging audiences over time and across platforms.

Culturally Relevant and Inclusive Storytelling: Audiences today demand stories that not only entertain but also reflect modern societal issues—diverse narratives, inclusive casts, and themes that address current cultural and environmental concerns. Projects that holistically incorporate these elements tend to resonate more deeply, and studios are actively seeking scripts that can do just that.

Cost-Efficient Production Models Amid Global Shifts: In a post-pandemic and post-strike environment, financial caution remains key. Production companies are increasingly favoring projects that promise a strong return on investment without ballooning budgets. This has led to a renewed interest in production models that leverage global incentives, tax credits, and smart location choices away from traditional hubs like Los Angeles, where recent structural challenges have prompted a shift.

For writers, the takeaway is clear: success today depends on creating narratives that walk the tightrope between the comfort of established genres and the allure of innovation. Whether you’re reimagining a classic trope or breaking new ground with interactive or multiplatform storytelling, aligning your creative vision with these market shifts will not only help you get noticed—but might also position you at the very forefront of Hollywood’s next wave.

There’s much more to unpack regarding combining genre elements and crafting narratives that blend spectacle with interactivity. What are your thoughts on experimenting with hybrid genres, and how might you see these trends influencing the kind of stories you want to tell?

WHICH GENRES ARE CURRENTLY THE MOST PROFITABLE IN HOLLYWOOD?

Based on the latest data from Statista, the most profitable genres in Hollywood, especially in the North American market, are action and adventure films. In 2024, action movies captured nearly 29% of the box office revenue in the United States and Canada, while adventure films accounted for about 25%. Looking at a longer timeline, from 1995 to 2024, adventure films generated more than 67 billion dollars at the box office in North America, with action movies following closely at over 60 billion dollars.

These figures underscore the dominance of high-octane, spectacle-driven genres that not only draw massive audiences at the box office but also hold franchise potential—often leading to extended revenue through merchandising, international appeal, and ancillary revenue streams. Studios often lean on these genres because they can confidently bank on global appeal and the promise of blockbuster returns.

Given these trends, if you're diving into screenwriting or looking to craft a spec script, positioning your work within, or at least as a clever subversion of, the action/adventure framework might give you a competitive edge. It’s also worth exploring hybrid formats that blend established genre elements with fresh storytelling techniques for emerging streaming platforms.

Would you be interested in exploring how these trends might influence narrative structure or character development in these types of films?

WHAT ARE SOME MODERN FRANCHISES WITH HISTORICAL ROOTS?

Modern franchises have found remarkable success by weaving historical themes and settings into their narratives, creating a blend of authenticity, spectacle, and modern storytelling that resonates with audiences. Here are a few notable examples:

Indiana Jones: This franchise is perhaps the quintessential example of historical adventure done right. Blending archaeological intrigue, mythology, and pulse-pounding action, the Indiana Jones films transport audiences to bygone eras while keeping the narrative brisk and thrilling. Its long-standing success shows how historical roots can serve as the foundation for a series that appeals to both nostalgic and new fans.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Drawing on the mythos of the Golden Age of Piracy, this franchise marries historical settings with a supernatural edge. Its swashbuckling adventures, charismatic characters, and imaginative liberties with historical details have allowed it to carve out a niche that’s both historically flavored and fantastically entertaining. The series demonstrates that a deep dive into history doesn’t have to be austere—it can be as playful and over-the-top as needed for blockbuster appeal.

The Mummy Series: Originally launched in the 1990s, The Mummy series reimagined ancient Egyptian lore with a modern twist. By infusing its narrative with supernatural elements, high-stakes adventure, and a sense of romance, it transformed historical myth into an accessible franchise. Even attempts at reboots show that audiences remain fascinated by tales set in the enigmatic world of ancient Egypt.

Assassin’s Creed (Video Game Franchise): While it began in the gaming world, Assassin’s Creed has expanded its influence into film and other media. Known for its meticulous reconstruction of historical periods—from Renaissance Italy to Revolutionary America—this franchise excels at blending real historical events and figures with a fictional narrative. Its success is a testament to the appeal of immersive storytelling that bridges history with speculative adventure.

Television Series like Vikings and The Last Kingdom: In the realm of episodic storytelling, series such as Vikings and The Last Kingdom illustrate how historical drama can captivate a modern audience. By dramatizing significant historical events and figures, and mixing in elements of myth and creative license, these shows highlight a growing appetite for stories that breathe life into history while exploring timeless themes of power, identity, and fate.

These examples underline that when historical settings and figures are paired with dynamic storytelling and modern production values, the result can be both commercially successful and culturally impactful. They not only evoke a sense of authenticity and grandeur but also leave room for creative innovation, paving the way for fresh sequels or spin-offs that can further develop the narrative universe.

Q. Three of those franchises have, very unfortunately, played out, with Harrison Ford and Johnny Depp tied to these franchises, and Brendan Fraser also long overdue for a 'Mummy' remake, although Tom Cruise (much as we love him) in the mix did not stir box office numbers with the 'Mummy' offering from 2017. That suggests there is a gaping hole in the action-adventures genre with historical themes. Though Indiana Jones is much loved, Dial of Destiny, also performed unconvincingly at the box office. And yet another 'The Mummy' reboot is set for release in 2026, starring Jack Reynor, also suggesting that "Cleopatra The Mummy" is mixing it up in the current blender of stories that studios are involved in and may be looking for more of. That being evident, who might play John Storm, descendant of Mark Antony, and more importantly, given the need for some historical semblance of ancient Macedonian/Egyptian roots, who might play the ressurected Cleopatra?

A. When it comes to reimagining a legendary role like John Storm—a modern action hero with roots tracing back to Mark Antony—the actor needs to embody both a rugged physical presence and an air of ancient gravitas. Two names that naturally come to mind are Alexander Skarsgård and Oscar Isaac.

Alexander Skarsgård: His imposing physique and commanding screen presence have already proved he can carry both high-octane action and layered dramatic narratives. With roles ranging from period pieces to modern thrillers, Skarsgård could convincingly portray a character whose lineage is steeped in historical myth while still engaging a contemporary audience.

Oscar Isaac: Known for his charismatic intensity and versatility—from science fiction epics to intimate dramas—Isaac has the ability to breathe nuance into a role that straddles the past and the present. His performances often exude a sense of mystery and depth, qualities that would be essential for a character burdened with an illustrious, ancient heritage.

For the resurrected Cleopatra—a figure who must balance historical authenticity with modern cinematic magnetism—the casting challenge is equally intriguing. Here, studios have two main avenues to consider:

Gal Gadot: Having already become synonymous with a modern warrior-queen in films like Wonder Woman, Gadot brings undeniable star power and an established action-adventure aura. Although her casting in past Cleopatra projects has sparked debate over historical authenticity—with Cleopatra’s Macedonian heritage often cited as a point of contention—her proven ability to carry a film laden with both spectacle and emotional depth could make her a viable candidate if the production embraces a reinterpreted, larger-than-life Cleopatra.

Emerging Talent with Mediterranean Roots (e.g., Maria Bakalova): If historical verisimilitude is a priority, casting an actress who genuinely reflects the Macedonian–Greek lineage of Cleopatra could strike a fresh, intriguing chord with audiences. Maria Bakalova, for instance, has demonstrated both versatility and a magnetic screen presence—even in roles that blend humor and drama. Her Mediterranean features and ability to deliver a performance with both vulnerability and fierce determination might allow her to redefine Cleopatra as a queen who is at once ancient and profoundly modern.

Studios, always cautious of undue risks yet hungry for franchise potential, would likely be intrigued by the idea of anchoring a new saga in such dynamic, well-rounded characters. By selecting actors who can transcend mere star status and instead breathe life into characters linked intimately with history and myth, the filmmakers can craft a narrative that not only pays homage to classic franchise tropes but also builds a platform for potential sequels and cross-platform storytelling.

CASTING CLEOPATRA THE MUMMY RESURRECTED

Given that Jack Reynor is set to star in a fresh take on The Mummy, imagining a sequel or spin-off that introduces a character like John Storm—a descendant of Mark Antony—opens the door to intriguing possibilities. For John Storm, you’d want an actor who carries classic heroic gravitas with a modern edge, someone who can straddle both the rugged action-adventure persona and the refined legacy of an ancient lineage. An actor like Henry Cavill comes to mind. His chiseled features, commanding presence, and prior work in both historical and fantastical settings make him a compelling choice. Alternatively, Richard Madden could bring a blend of vulnerability and determined heroism, bridging a refined, aristocratic quality with the physicality this role demands.

For the resurrected Cleopatra, honoring both the historical context—steeped in ancient Macedonian and Egyptian roots—and the cinematic spectacle the modern audience craves is key. Cleopatra’s casting must evoke regal allure, mystique, and timeless strength. Gal Gadot could be an excellent fit here. Her proven ability to radiate authority and feminine power, underscored by her work in mythic and action roles, would serve to reinvent Cleopatra as a timeless figure reborn. Alternatively, Zoë Saldaña could be considered; her magnetic screen presence and versatility have proven effective in both high-stakes action and layered dramatic narratives. There's also an opportunity for casting fresh talent from the international or Middle Eastern scene—someone whose heritage might align even more authentically with the historical and cultural nuances of ancient Egypt and Macedonia, which could add an enriching layer of authenticity to the role.

This type of casting would not only align with an appetite for historically inspired action-adventure epics but would also resonate with contemporary audiences that crave characters who embody both mythic legacy and modern complexity. It’s the kind of daring reimagining that can reinvigorate classic franchises while boldly exploring new narrative territory.

Looking ahead, one might also consider the dynamics between these characters—not just as isolated archetypes but as a duo whose storied past echoes a legendary romance and rivalry reminiscent of Antony and Cleopatra themselves. The right chemistry, combined with thoughtful direction and a fresh narrative vision, could potentially transform this reboot into a new benchmark for historical—and action—epic storytelling.

Armie Hammer, with a classic, almost timeless look and a reputation for playing aristocratic characters, Hammer might tap into both the physical and the regal aspects inherent in a descendant of one of history’s most notorious figures. His presence on screen would underline the internal conflict between inherited nobility and personal identity.

FOR CLEOPATRA REBORN

Alicia Vikander offers a blend of delicate beauty and formidable strength. Her ability to convey both vulnerability and determination means she could reinvent Cleopatra as a character who is as intellectually keen as she is regal—a queen whose legacy transcends the usual historical tropes.

Marion Cotillard Bringing European sophistication and an air of mystery, Cotillard could provide a mature and layered interpretation of Cleopatra. Her gravitas and dramatic intensity might reframe the queen as not merely an icon of seduction but also as a strategist and a survivor, adding a rich, gritty texture to the role.
